Acupuncture: What is it and how does it work?
Acupuncture promotes natural healing and improves functions of the body. Inserting very thin, sterile needles at specific acupuncture points can influence the circulation of blood throughout the body. In fact, the discovery of blood circulation occurred in China 2,000 years before it was discovered in Europe. This medicine has stood the test of time. Unfortunately, acupuncture is very misunderstood in western culture. There is nothing mystical or magical about acupuncture.
Acupuncture was developed through observation, along with trial and error, over thousands of years. However, it does not work well with the Scientific Method, because each patient is seen as an individual. That makes it difficult to design legitimate studies around the effects of acupuncture using the Scientific Method. We cannot give everyone the same treatment and expect significant results. Due to that fact, our medical and scientific communities have been slow to accept acupuncture as a viable medicine.
Acupuncture is a great way to reestablish circulation and rebalance the different systems in the body. Our bodies have incredible healing power, and the goal of holistic medicine is to encourage these abilities. We will work to find the root of the problem, and not just mask the symptoms. At your appointment, we will discuss how this will apply to you specifically.

Afraid of Needles?
We understand the apprehension that many have with needles. The misconception is that a lot of people associate the word "needle" with a hypodermic needle. We are not giving anyone shots. The needles we use are much different. More than twenty of the acupuncture needles we use at NWA Sports Acupuncture can fit inside an 18 gauge hypodermic needle (typically used for blood tests).
New Patient?
Your first appointment will include a full medical intake, followed by an acupuncture treatment, along with an herbal consultation. We will work to relieve your symptoms, but our primary goal is to find and correct the root of the problem. If the source is not corrected, then the symptoms will continue to exist.
AcupunctureAcupuncture is an ancient technique in which the practitioner inserts hair-thin needles into specific points on the body to prevent or treat illness. It is one of the oldest, and most widely used, medical practices in the world. There is a good reason for the continued use and development of acupuncture, it works.

Herbal ConsultationChinese herbs have a long and valued tradition of treating the root cause of disease, with modern research continually reinforcing the knowledge that has been around for thousands of years. Herbs are prescribed based on the individual patient, not just the disease.

CuppingCupping therapy involves the use of glass or plastic cups to create a vacuum on the skin. This suction is like inverse massage. By pulling the soft tissue into the cup, we can increase blood flow and decrease tension for an extended period of time.

RocktapeKinesiology tape is used for the treatment and prevention of injury, as well as performance enhancement. When applied to the skin with a certain amount of stretch, the tape retracts and lifts the skin. This allows for increased blood flow, oxygen delivery, and inflammation clearing, along with decreased pain and tension.

MobilityPart of our role in your health is education. Mobility work is one of the ways that we can help you work through musculoskeletal problems, and prevent further injury in the future. The simple truth is that we spend far too much time in immobile positions. We were designed to move! Mobility work can help you move more efficiently, with greater strength and speed, and with less injuries.

BodyworkWe use a unique system of bodywork in conjunction with other therapies, especially acupuncture. Manipulating the soft tissue with distal points needled can offer a profound change in tissue quality.

NutritionFood is medicine. We live in a time of convenience. We have a multitude of choices every day when it comes to food. With all that convenience comes poor nutrition, and poor quality of food. We easily forget the old saying, "you are what you eat." Nutrition is one of our most important tools in healing.
